national tetrathlon
Dates: August 3rd-7th, 2016
The first National Tetrathlon since 2009 held in our Region was a great success. It was an amazing 5 days thanks to Kathryn Robertson, Paul and Melanie Denoon, James and Pauline Rudolph, Jay and Hellaina Rothenburg, and Andrea Pang, Ashtyn & Tony Yu who got involved in being the event and scoring organizers, Tack Two EMS, Liz Lewis (TD), Cristin McCarty (former pony clubber and our judge) our wonderful billeting families (Legers, Denoons, Synnotts, Chauvins, Rudolphs, and Yus), tetrathletes and Pony Clubbers who donated their horses, and, family members who helped at the various venues and cheered on our tetrathletes.
Our venues were fantastic and enjoyed by all the tetrathletes - U of Guelph pool (swim), Pioneer Sportsmen Center (shoot), U of Guelph Turf Grass Institute (run) and Old Orchard Farm (ride). We witnessed incredibly poised young women and men turn in some great performances - riding, stable management (even after a very LATE night in the parking lot that was the QEW after our fun day in Niagara Falls and Marineland), personal bests in the pool for several tetrathletes, great runs and to top it off, some good shooting. Results are posted on the National CPC website (www.canadianponyclub.org/what-we-do.php?page=tetrathlon&topic=national-championships)
Top OVERALL - Alyssa Yu
Top Shooter - Emma Massa/ Jonathan Denoon
Top Swimmer - Alyssa Yu/ Jonathan Denoon
Top Runner - Sara Chauvin/Aidan Outerbridge
Top Rider - Alyssa Yu/ Erik Zimmerman
Top Turnout - Alyssa Yu/Acacia Gifford/ Shalom Leger
Thanks to our numerous sponsors (see Tetrathlon Event Program attached) we were able to organize exceptional team building outings, highlighted by a video message of encouragement from Donna Vakalis, Olympian Pentathlete and Wall of Fame Pony Clubber, our trip to Marineland and Niagara falls, a classy award dinner at York Road Kitchen with fabulous sponsor-donated prizes with an elegant turn-out of athletes that surpassed those of the horses ;-), along with the departure social day at Ripley’s aquarium followed by brunch with spectacular views of Toronto at the 360 Restaurant at the top of the CN Tower.
A big part of our successful National Tetrathlon was having such wonderful and enthusiastic tetrathletes that got along so well, respected their billeting families and the loaned horses, and grew together as a family throughout the few days that we were together. We had competitors from British Columbia Island (Erik Zimmerman, Lauren Belyea-Nisbet, Winter Koyote), Saskatchewan (Kylie Couture, Jaclyn Aarrestad), the USA (Emma Massa) and all three regions of Ontario (SLOV - Acacia Gifford; COR - Patricia Rothenburg; and WOR - Alyssa Yu, Shalom Leger, Georgia Rudolph, Sara Chauvin, Jonathan Denoon, Stuart Synnott, and Aiden Outerbridge). They ALL exemplified the Pony Club member characteristics: SPORTSMANSHIP, LOYALTY and CHARACTER. They ALL are the reason we volunteer to organize these events. Pony Club is about our kids. My only regret is that we did not have more time together.
Thanks in great part to our sponsors/donors, the grant from the Canadian Pony Club, hosting by our billeting families, and member donation of horses for the event, we were able to keep registration fees low, and we were able to stay on budget and did not necessitate any additional funding from the Western Ontario Region Pony Club
